Vienna - Aug. 22
- Ohio Valley
University men’s lacrosse coach, Carl Anderson welcomed
Bridgeport's Mike Mullen as his first signed West Virginia recruit. OVU
will move from club status to the ranks of NCAA Division II this year.
Coach Anderson noted, “It was a feeling like no other for me because when I
received Mullen’s signed National Letter of Intent in May it was the
realization that we were official. Division II is a big jump from club and
with Mullen signing, it was the first step in preparing ourselves for it.”
The fact that he was the first West Virginia recruit to sign was especially
meaningful to Mullen. “It’s really exciting to be the first player from
West Virginia to sign at OVU.”
Coach
Anderson first saw Mullen play in the 2010 Meltdown preseason tournament
hosted by Fairmont Senior. “I wasn’t really looking for anything or anyone
in particular but wanted to see what West Virginia had to offer our program.
Mullen caught my eye by the end of the day. He showed exceptional skill with
both hands. Being a natural lefty, he had a wicked left-handed shot. I was
impressed with his drive and intensity. That is the kind of kid I want to
build our program on.” After visiting the campus Mullen decided to accept
the scholarship offer saying, “OVU is a Christian school with small class
sizes, which is what I was looking for. Getting the opportunity to play
lacrosse is a bonus.”
Mullen is willing to play any position in
college, but will most likely stay at attack. “Mike played the attack
position with Bridgeport and will carry on to play attack with us. Being a
natural lefty, I want to sit Mike out on the right pipe. I have confidence
that he will be able to find good shots and find the open man to help our
offense really push the ball and test the opposition. I am also confident in
Mike’s skill set to be able to move him around the field and use him as a
midfielder in an inverted offense.”
Mullen’s high school coach (and father), Jim Mullen is excited about the growth of high school lacrosse in the state. “If someone would've told me three years ago, when I started the program, that one of my players would be playing NCAA lacrosse I would've laughed at them. It's great to see how far things have come in such a short time. It's especially exciting to see a West Virginia college offering scholarships to the kids in the State. Coach Anderson at OVU should be applauded for recruiting in the state. This will only help grow the sport at the high school level.”
Ohio Valley University and Bethany College join Wheeling Jesuit as the only NCAA men's lacrosse teams in the state. On the women's side, West Virginia Wesleyan will be fielding their first NCAA team this spring. They will be joining Shepherd University, who fielded their first varsity women's program last spring.

WVU CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL LACROSSE
CLASSIC |
Morgantown, Sept. 28 - The WVU Lacrosse team's Children's Hospital
Lacrosse Classic, this past weekend, was a tremendous success for the second
straight year, raising $200 for the Child Life Department of the Children's
Hospital. However, the team did not fare so well on the field. WVU's Coach, Flip
Green said, "While we invited an extremely talented field, which resulted in us
losing all of our games, the benefits will be felt in the spring. The experience
of playing top notch talent in the fall will help to speed our development for
regular season in the spring." Coach Green added that it was a good experience for everyone, players and spectators included. "We received nothing but very positive comments from all of our guests. Our biggest problem next year will be narrowing the field of invitees to four teams. We had to turn away four very good teams that wanted to come. The word has gotten out that the tournament formerly known as the "MILT" is back and, once again, an outstanding tournament, as it was in the past." The weekend started off with an Alumni golf outing at Mountaineer Golf Course Friday afternoon, followed by at "meet and greet" with the current team on Friday night. It was reported that a good time was had by all. The Alumni team beat the current team 9-4 Saturday afternoon. The WVU Lacrosse Team wishes to thank all the teams, parents, Alumni, and fans for participating in the event. They especially want to thank the volunteers who contributed their time to make the tournament a success. The lacrosse team's goal is to raise $500 for the Children's Hospital next year. The Mountaineers will next travel to Slippery Rock on October 24 for two games. They will finish up their fall season at the NCLL/MCLA Challenge at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Va. November.5-7. |
