WHEELING ISLAND STADIUM - Mar. 19 - The visiting
Baldwin lacrosse team put in a strong 19-2 performance against Wheeling
Central in both teams' first game of the 2008 season. It was only fitting
that a game played that day would be on an island. A driving rain from the
first face off whistle to the last horn pelted the teams throughout the
game. Kevin Maloney, Central's second year coach, said, "They are a senior
laden team with size and speed. It was a long night, but we learned much
from it."
Wheeling Central takes the field again next
when they host Morgantown High (2-0) on April 1.

KINGWOOD - Mar. 20 - A meeting was held in the
Preston High School Library last night to organize boys and girls
lacrosse teams at PHS. In attendance were Mr. Riley, PHS Principal, Mr.
Huggins, Athletic Administrator, Mr. Contic, Athletic Administrator &
Wrestling Coach, along with several parents and players. Several issues
were discussed, including insurance, funding, and possible places to
practice.
It was decided to actively advertise for a coach
and to start seeking sources of funds, including grants. The
administrators present felt that it might be best to first organize a
self-supporting community team, then work from there. Mr. Contic will
continue exploring how other programs handle catastrophic insurance.
BUCKHANNON - Apr. 17 - The Buckhannon-Upshur boys team won their first game ever with a 3-2 victory over Bridgeport last night. ST. ALBANS - Apr. 27 - On Friday the
Buckhannon-Upshur lacrosse team traveled to St. Albans, WV and
took on the St. Albans second year program. The Buccaneers lost by a
final of 7-8. The Bucs fell behind 4-8 in the 3rd period but came
scrapping back, nearly pulling off the upset of the season. St. Albans'
attackman Noah Colebank was nearly a one man show scoring 6 goals for the
Red Dragons. Colebank had played lacrosse for several seasons in New York
where the game is quite popular.
The Bucs Dakota Davis scored his first goal of the evening with an assist
from Moss with 8:59 remaining in the half, narrowing the score to 2-4.
The Buccaneers set up and played offense the best they had all season.
Coleman struck again for the Dragons with 2:35 remaining in the 2nd
quarter leaving the halftime score 2-5.
St. Albans scored first 1:10 into the 1st period on a Colebank shot. The
Bucs came right back, just :29 seconds later when Jr. Jake Moss slammed
one home with an assist from Sr. Dakota Davis. Phillip Berry then scored
for the Dragons and Coleman added 2 more to give St. Albans a 1-4
advantage after one quarter of play.
The 4th quarter belonged to the Buccaneers. Soph. Alex Barger, who's played well all season, helped with a 4th quarter shut-out from his goalie position. Jr. Joe Schiff scored an unassisted goal at the 9:16 mark making the score 5-8. Davis then got his 4th goal with an assist from Moss to tighten thins up to 6-8. Soph. Ryan Lockwood then scored for B-U to make it 7-8. The Dragons then gained possession on the next face-off and managed to run out the clock.
Coach Matt Gillespie was very pleased with the Buccaneers performance on Friday. "The kids are learning the game and playing better as a team. It really shows in how much less time we spent in the penalty box, we're understanding how to play." The Buccaneers played their best game to date. B-UHS is developing an understanding of the game of lacrosse, improving stick skills as well as running offense and defense.
The Bucs wind up their first ever lacrosse season on Wednesday 30 April at Morgantown High. JV game at 5:30 and Varsity at 7:30.
