MORGANTOWN - Sept. 4 - Representatives of all the lacrosse
programs in the state will meet on Sunday, September 16 at University High
in Morgantown to organize a West Virginia high school boys lacrosse league.
The league hopes to be up and running for the 2008 season.
There are presently three West Virginia teams competing
in the Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (WPSLA) as full
members and three Wheeling area teams competing as Associate Members, with
more teams forming throughout the Mountain State each year. Boys lacrosse will be
made "official" in Pennsylvania for the 2009 season, leaving the West
Virginia teams without a league. Some teams in Pa. may elect to stay
"unofficial", but no one really knows what will happen.
The Pennsylvania teams will still be
allowed to play West Virginia teams in 2009, but only after the Pa. teams have
fulfilled the requirements of their new league and if they are under their
limit of games.
The more established West Virginia teams will form the
nucleus of the new West Virginia league and will continue to play in
whatever is left of the WPSLA.
Since there are only three high school girls teams in
the state, the meeting will be to organize a boys league. With the growth of
the sport in the state, we expect to have a girls league in a couple years.
There will be a discussion of forming a West Virginia
Chapter of US Lacrosse after the high school meeting. If there is enough
interest, a vote will taken to form the chapter. If the vote is in the
affirmative, the process to form the chapter will begin.
MORGANTOWN - Oct. 5 - Representatives of most of the lacrosse
programs in the state met recently to organize the West Virginia Scholastic
Lacrosse Association (WVSLA), a high school boys lacrosse league.
The league will sponsor a playoff and championship game for the 2008 season.
Charter members of the WVSLA are Bridgeport,
Buckhannon-Upshur, a Charleston team, Fairmont Senior, Linsly School,
Morgantown, and University. The representatives from Charleston could not
officially claim affiliation with a school, but hope to fielding a team from
George Wsahington. Representatives from St. Albans, Wheeling Central
Catholic, and Wheeling Park were not present at the meeting, but are
expected to join the new league.
The members decided, for the first year,
that to be eligible for the playoffs, a team must play a majority of the
teams in the league. All competition between member teams must be completed
by May 3 in order to have a final four on May 10 at the home of the higher
seed. The championship game would be May 17 at the home of the higher seed.
If anyone is interested in a Fall Ball event,
there is an "Open Team" for kids who want to play but do not have a full
team. Here's the info: THE 9TH ANNUAL BIG SHOT LACROSSE 7V7 FALL CLASSIC This event has been proven a great experience for high school teams looking to get the dust off the sticks in the fall. The event has drawn teams from all over the US and Canada in years past. The high speed of the 7v7 style is fun to watch and play. The website has a lot of information for you to look over if you are interested. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions that you may have. MORGANTOWN, Oct. 30 - Morgantown High has selected former MHS assistant coach, Thomas Moore, as it's 5th head coach in 11 years. Moore is the first "home grown" head coach in West Virginia. He graduated from Morgantown High in 2003 and will graduate from WVU in December with a degree in Music Education. In high school, he played attack for the Mohigans. He then played long stick midfield, defense, and midfield for the WVU club team. He now plays attack for the local men's team, Da Lazy Lizards. Moore began coaching as a volunteer JV Head Coach for Morgantown High in 2004. He was then elevated to Assistant Varsity Coach for the 2006 and 2007 seasons under then Head Coach Jim Lenke. He wants the team to keep getting better and better. "I plan to keep improving in all aspects of the game," said Moore yesterday. "There will be a lot of changes to the program, but the Morgantown traditions will still hold strong.". Moore is presently student teaching at Brookhaven Elementary to finish his degree and is already working on Morgantown's 2008 spring schedule.. |
