Lacrosse might as well have been a foreign language to the Morgantown Cougars two years ago. It was all
Greek to them. Many of the 25 or so who comprised the original Cougars in 1994 didn't have the foggiest notion of the sport, which is wildly popular in New York, New Jersey and Maryland. That first team won two of 12 games for coach and co-founder, David Myerberg, who grew up in Baltimore and played lacrosse in high school. "It was a complete learning experience," Myerberg said. "Most of the kids had never picked up a stick until then." On Monday, well into their second season, the Cougars defeated North Catholic of Pittsburgh 10-1 at the WVU Coliseum field to improve their record to 3-5. The victory illustrates the Cougars' evolution from beginning softies to a seasoned team that can't be taken too lightly. "North Catholic beat us real big last year, and we beat them easily this year," Myerberg said. "We've definitely improved." Playing in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Lacrosse League as the only high school team from West Virginia, the Cougars are stocked primarily with players from Morgantown and University High. Rivals in every other sport, MHS and UHS in this case have produced comrades in arms. [More content to be added later...] |
